Ave Regina – NCEM Recording Competition

Ah ‘The Tech Cupboard’, I miss it.

Every year, the National Centre for Early Music in York host a competition which invites young composers to write pieces in early styles for a different ensemble each year. The shortlist of winners have their pieces performed at the NCEM by the ensemble which, this year was The Ebor Singers 10-piece mixed choir, and recorded by students like myself for broadcast online and as a prize for the composers.

Myself and 3 other students were asked to record the performances and preceding workshops, which consisted of two performances of each piece. We were allowed to borrow all the equipment we could carry from our university but hadn’t heard the pieces or seen the venue before we were there and the sessions had begun.

We decided to go with an RME fireface interface going into my own Macbook Pro. As for microphones, we used 7 C414s (one for each pair of singers, two as a spaced pair).
